The Fish

WordPress isn’t letting me post the poem as it appears, and I think how it’s indented says a lot about the poem.  Here’s the link

Attempt number two.  I’ll start by pointing out that the poem is set up and it kind of looks like waves.  The way the stanzas are indented, they rise and fall.  I’m trying to figure out where the fish the poem is named after fits in, but it seems to be an oddity in the poem.  I see more images of violence and a conflict between the sea and the cliff. 

I looked online and a lot of sources seemed to say that there’s a message of man trying to control nature and shape it to fit our needs.  I can see the drive to change as the ocean pounds on the cliff and wears it down.  I guess, since the cliff takes damage but still remains, that’s a symbol for nature.  The sea could be humanity because it tries to shape the rock, but the rock sustains damage but will not change to let to ocean overtake everything.  But what about the fish?



If you just hit save your poems and commentary won’t be published, they’ll just save as drafts and won’t ever show up on your blog lol.  Don’t make that mistake guys.

I have been reading these poems for two weeks now and I still just can’t get them.  I’ve tried CPRing, keeping them in my pocket…  I have them printed and on my bedside table so i can reread them often.  I don’t know why she isn’t clicking.  Can someone help me?

Day’s End

Oxen and sheep were brought back down
Long ago, and bramble gates closed. Over
Mountains and rivers, far from my old garden,
A windswept moon rises into clear night.
Springs trickle down dark cliffs, and autumn
Dew fills ridgeline grasses. My hair seems
Whiter in lamplight. The flame flickers
Good fortune over and over — and for what?

I liked this poem because there’s a lot of life imagery.  There’s animals, trickling streams, rivers, gardens…  There’s an eerie feeling to the poem when he talks about the windswept moon and his hair white in the lamplight.  At the end of the poem he asks for what, seeming to question the things, the life, that he mentioned in the poem.  The windswept moon is cold and lonely and always hovering over everything, like a reminder of death.  Is Tu Fu questioning the meaning of life?

      Do I behold these steep and lofty cliffs, 
      That on a wild secluded scene impress

   Upon reading this I thought a lot of last year when we did transcendentalism.  His focus on nature  reminded me of people we read like Emerson and Thorough.  I liked how the poem ended, how things were different than when he had been there originally.  It's like he's looking back on his life and realizes that he's in a different place and can't go back to what he was.

That one is a bunch of poems posted by poets that I don’t think are especially famous but are recognized by the professor that started the blog.  I’m not sure, but I’m trying to look into it more.

This blog seems to have a lot of information and I’m reading it, but I’m not exactly sure how everything works.  There’s a lot of links  and commentary.  I’m still discovering.  I’ll post more once I figure everything out.


a girlfriend came in
built me a bed

There were a few interesting things I noticed in this poem.  First of all, it says noe instead of now when he talks about sitting in perfection.  I checked other sources and it’s not a misprint Mr. Ny accidentally did.  When I looked it up on the internet, noe isn’t a word it just means Noah, like Noah and his arc.  Another thing I found interesting is that nothing was capitalized except for I.  I don’t think it’s really egocentric.  I think it deals with the philosophy where you are the only person that exists, sophisism or something?   I like how he says “I felt better when everything was in disorder.”  These girlfriends can’t change that he likes thing chaotic and I like that.  I especially like his appreciation for chaos.


A god in wrath
Was beating a man;
He cuffed him loudly

That rang and rolled over the earth.
All people came running.
The man screamed and struggled,
And bit madly at the feet of the god.

“Ah, what a wicked man!”
And “Ah, what a redoubtable god!”

I’d like to start by saying that Stephen Crane is my favorite poet since we did Mark Strand.  My favorite is the first poem about the creature but I don’t want to think to much about it and find something about it that I hate lol.  So instead I’ll talk about this one.  I think in this poem Crane is commenting on God, obviously.  He’s moving away from God as goodness ideas and into the thought that God can be cruel.  I think he’s commenting on religion and trying to change people’s perspectives.  Perhaps he feels religion makes people worship a feared idol and makes human beings wicked.  He seems to be saying that maybe religion isn’t as pretty of a picture as it can be painted.

The Emperor of Ice Cream

Call the roller of big cigars,

The muscular one, and bid him whip

In kitchen cups concupiscent curds.

Let the wenches dawdle in such dress

As they are used to wear, and let the boys

Bring flowers in last month’s newspapers.

Let be be finale of seem.

The only emperor is the emperor of ice-cream.


Take from the dresser of deal,

Lacking the three glass knobs, that sheet

On which she embroidered fantails once

And spread it so as to cover her face.

If her horny feet protrude, they come

To show how cold she is, and dumb.

Let the lamp affix its beam.

The only emperor is the emperor of ice-cream.


I think that stevens is commenting on how fleeting life is.  Ice cream melts and is lost, so the the emperor only rules something temporary.  I found wallace stevens to be very transcendental and not attached to material things, like that guy last year that lived in the woods writing a book for a long time.  Stevens seems to believe that reality can’t be trusted because we don’t know what’s real.

The Ride

The horse beneath me seemed

To know what course to steer

Through the horror of snow I dreamed,

And so I had no fear,


Nor was I chilled to death

By the winds white shudders, thanks

To the veils of his patient breath

And the mist of sweat from his flanks.


It seemed that all night through,

Within my hand no rein

And nothing in my view

But the pillar of his mane,


I rode with magic ease

At a quick, unstumbling trot

Through shattering vacancies

On into what was not,


Till the weave of the storm grew thin,

With a threading of cedar-smoke,

And the ice-blind pane of an inn

Shimmered, and I awoke.


How shall I now get back

To the inn-yard where he stands,

Burdened with every lack,

And waken the stable-hands


To give him, before I think

That there was no horse at all,

Some hay, some water to drink,

Read by Wilbur:

 When I read this I thought about the two packets we had to read at the beginning of the year and do the writing scaffolds on.  In one of them the author takes a Robert Frost poem and dissects it to find its meaning.  I was reminded of this because in this poem he trusts his horse while in the Frost poem the horse is the opposing force.  The connection the horse and Wilbur had in this poem I found interesting.
